Architecture plays a crucial role in the control, illegalization and oppression of migrants and their participation in society. Canadian architect and activist Tings Chak reveals in her new graphic novel “Undocumented: The Architecture of Migrant Detention” what is otherwise hidden from sight: the architectures of deportation. On Thursday, December 11th she will talk with activists of Lampedusa in Hanau and Refugees for Change about the material and immaterial practices of deportation and exclusion, as well as strategies to resist them. An installation will illustrate how architecture works in repressive contexts.
The discussion takes place in the former police and deportation prison Klapperfeld. Here, mostly from the 1980s on until the closure of the prison in 2002, migrants who were facing deportation were detained for weeks or months in miserable conditions, as numerous inscriptions testify to. The former deportation block is open at 6.30 pm and after the event.
